Biography

This profile is part of the Chapman Name Study.

Charlie was born on September 14, 1877 in Spartanburg SC, the son of William Chapman and Mary E. Bell Chapman. [1][2] He was the brother of Clautus G. Chapman, Sarah Chapman, Minnie Chapman, Lizzie (Chapman) Nix, Nancy (Chapman) Jones and Florence (Chapman) Poole.

Valley Falls is a mill village. Lolo Mill was founded in 1857, run by the waters of Lawson's Fork Creek. [3] Charlie grew up near Lolo Mill where his family worked. He likely worked there from a very young age, possibly seven or eight years old, according to the custom of southern textile mills of that era. [4][5] Charlie became a skilled mechanic in the mill and was a valued worker. [6]
