Mary Jane Chapman was born July 5, 1862 at Rochester, Minnesota; her parents were Dr. James H. Chapman and his wife Sarah Eliveth (McCollum) Chapman.[1]
On April 16, 1882 at Rochester, Minnesota, Mary Jane married Herbert Cyrus Aldrich, son of Cyrus C. Aldrich and his wife Amanda (Chapin) Aldrich.[2][3]
Sometime between 1884 and 1887 they moved to Maine, Otter Tail County, Minnesota where they lived until approximately 1893, for it was at Maine that their next two children were born; Clara M. in 1887 and James Cyrus in 1891, who used the name "Cy." In 1900 they were living at Moose, Beltrami County, Minnesota,[2][4]just south east of Bagley, Clearwater County, having arrived by 1895. Their second daughter, Maud Ruth, who used the name Ruth, was born; then came Wallace, Jesse, and Earl.
The winter of 1901, there was a lot of sickness in the family. All recovered except their daughter, Clara, who died of pneumonia at the age of 15 years.[5]A short time after her death the decision was made to move to the Pacific Northwest. Herbert left first with son Wallace, arriving in Washington State in 1904. Mary and the other children arrived by train in the fall of 1906, with the exception of Claude and his wife Otilda who remained on their homestead in Popple Township, Minnesota.[6]
Herb, Mary and family went first to Read Island, British Columbia to be near Mary's sister Mrs. Hattie Wylie. With the outbreak of World War I, they went to Manson's Landing, Cortez Island, British Columbia where they bought land, built a house, and established the Aldrich Lumber Company. Ill people from islands all around came to visit Mary, for she had a wealth of knowledge about herbal healing, taught by her Minnesota father, Dr. James Chapman.[6]
In 1923, by then a somewhat elderly couple, they retired and returned to the U.S., making their home at 602 Hamilton Avenue, Centralia, Washington, They had a prolific garden in their back yard with several kinds of fruit trees.[6]
Children of the couple:
Harry Claude "Claude" was born February 7, 1884 at Morristown, Minnesota[2][7]
Clara Maude, born April 5, 1891 at Maine, Minnesota[2]and died February 8, 1902.[8]
James Cyrus "Cy". born April 5, 1891 at Maine, Minnesota[2][9]
Maude Ruth "Ruth", born September 19, 1895 at Moose, Beltrami County, Minnesota[2][10]
Mary's husband Herbert Aldrich died in Centralia at the age of 87, September 19, 1944.[13]
Mary lived until January 31, 1947 and also died at Centralia, Washington.[14][15]One of her daughters-in-law described her - "Her name was Mary but they called her Mack. She was a hard woman you know." Though small of stature, she was tall on determination and strength of character.[12]
Mary Jane (Chapman) Aldrich was buried at Mt. View Burial Park, Aberdeen, Washington.[15]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
We may have some shared lineage. The Chapman line met the Levan line three generations into my ancestry and I'm still lost how the lineage at the end we hear about connects to the lineage I have evidence of. If you have clues, I'd love to collaborate.
