Biography

First hand knowledge (Grandmother Matthew Koeppen) - KOTULA, LUELLA R. was born 30 June 1917 in the Village of Patchogue [1]. She received Social Security number 132-10-2193 (indicating New York) and, Death Master File says, died 15 May 2012 4280194

Daughter of William Clark Chapman and Ella Katherine Prall, wife of Ludwig Kotula and mother of Jeanne and Betty Kotula (married Ozer) [2]

In 1920, William (41) with his wife Ella K (31) and daughter Luella (2) were living in the house owned by Emily J Chapman (73), William's Mother-in-law Ida H Prall (59) who was retired and widowed, located at 19 Carmen Street, Patchogue, Suffolk, New York, United States. Also at that address was her other son Alfred Noble (35) who was still single. Emily continued her ownership of the house mortgage free. Everyone in the household and their parents were born in New York, and also able to read, write, and speak English (except the infant Luella). William and his brother Alfred Noble continued their respective employment as studio photographers who were ‘Working on their own account’.[3]

In 1925, William (46) with his wife Ella K (36), daughters Luella R (7), and Emily K (4), and Mother-in-law Ida H Prall (64) were living at 112 Cedar Avenue, Patchogue, Suffolk, New York, United States. Everyone was listed United Stated citizens living in the United States their entire lives. William was a storekeeper and employer, while Ella was listed as a store clerk. Luella was listed as attending school and her sister Emily was too young. Ella K Prall was listed as doing housework.[4]

In 1930, William (51) and Ella (42) were shown to be living with their two daughters, Luella (12) and Emily (9), and also Ella’s mother Ida (Silliman) Prall (69) at 112 Cedar Avenue, Patchogue, Suffolk, New York, Unites States. The data also shows age of first marriage which is William at 35, Ella at 25, and Ida at 24. William owned a restaurant and Ella was the manager with an annual household income of $7,000. Birthplaces for everyone in the household, except William’s father who was born in England, is listed at New York. William is not listed as a veteran.[8]


First Marriage: Luella Ruth Chapman was a war bride during WWII and married Arthur Reubin Edwards (Son of Walter H. Edwards and Hattie Johnson) on February 21, 1942. Both were listed as single. Arthur was 29 and Luella 24. Arthur was in the Army and stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, United States, but listed his home address as Park Ave, Blue Point, New York. Luella joined him there (at some point prior to their marriage - first hand knowledge of Koeppen-11) and listed her home address as 112 Cedar Ave, Long Island, N.Y. (actually Patchogue, Suffolk, New York). B.W. Persinger (living at 938 Westover Ave, Norfolk, Virginia, United Statess) of the Methodist Church was the celebrant. [9]

Wedding Announcement: EDWARDS-CHAMPMAN Miss Luella Chapman, daughter of Mrs. William C. Chapman of Cedar avenue, and the late William C. Chapman, and Arthur R. Edwards, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Edwards of Blue Point, were married Saturday at 7:30 p. m. in the chapel of the Epworth Methodist churck of Norfolk, Va. by the Rev. B. M. Persinger. The bride wore a white print dress with white accessories and a corsage of gardenias, was attended by Ms. Ruth Edwards who wore a dusty rose crepe dress with corsage of gardenias. Stanley Edwards, brother of the bridegroom, was the best man. Other guests included Mr. and Mrs. Howard Van Pelt of Norfolk and Mrs. Walter Manning of Brooklyn. Immediately following the ceremony a dinner was held at the Pine Tree Inn, Virginia Beach. The bride is a graduate of Patchogue High school and attended Packard school of New York, and is now employed by the Blue Point Laundry. Mr. Edwards is with the 212th C. A. A. A. [10]

November, 1942: Pfc. Arthur Edwars has returned to Seatlle, Wash., after spending an eight-day furlough with his wife, the former Miss Luella Chapman, at their home on Cedar avenue. [11]

The marriage ended March 8, 1945 when Arthur was killed in action in Bergbuir-Beibluir, Germany. They had no children.[12] Luella spoke of her first marriage one time and had expressed how Arthur was the love of her life and how she missed him dearly.[13]

ADD ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE NEWSPAPER ARTICLE Second Marriage: Luella (now the widow Luella Edwards) married Ludwig J Kotula at St. Francis De Sales Church on April 20, 1947 at 4:00 PM by Rev. John Gorman. The reception was held at Shaber's Restaurant. They honeymooned in New York City for a week afterward.[14][15][16][17]

During February 1949, Members of the staff of the Union Savings Bank and their guests enjoyed a dinner-dance at the Patchogue hotel Saturday night. Music during dinner and for dancing was furnished by Phil Reed at the organ. The committee in charge of arrangements was headed by Mrs. Luella Kotula.[20]

Also during February 1949, Mrs. Dennis Stacey of Glastonbury, England, was given a Bon Voyage shower Wednesday evening by Mrs. Noble Chapman at the home of Mrs. Stacey's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Chapman of Church street. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Beveridge, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Davies, Mr. and Mrs. Bent Ebell, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Wicks, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kotula (Ludwig and Luella), Mr. and Mrs. Norman King, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Abrams and Mr. and Mrs. Noble Chapman. Mrs. Stacey has been visiting her brother-in-law and sister and will sail for England next Friday.[21]

August, 1949 - Pretty bridal shower in honor of Aliss Pauline Otis of Rider avenue on Tuesday night at the home Mr. and Mrs.. Robert Maggio in Bellport...The guest-of-honor received many lovely gifts from absent and present friends. Those present were the Mesdames Ludwig Kotula..Miss Otis will be married September 3 to William Carleton of Patchogue.[23]

During January 1951, Mrs. William Carleton of Maple avenue was guest-of-honor at a stork shower held at the home of Mrs. Robert Maggio in Bellport last Wednesday night. The many lovely gifts were in a beautifully decorated cradle. Those present were Mesdames...L. Kotula...[26]

During April 1951 a stork shower (in advance of daughter Jeanne Kotula) was held Friday night in honor of Mrs. L. Kotula at the home of Mrs. Nicholas Fleischmann, with Mrs. Howaid Loper of Center Moriches and Mrs. Guy Wicks, Jr., of Patchogue as co-hostesses. The rooms were decorated in pink and blue and the attractive table was centered with a huge shower cake holding a stork. The guests were Mesdames John H. Murray, Richard Bowman, Elbert King, Chester Mason, Miciiael De Betta, Joseph Funaro, William Carleton, T. B. Clason, Emerson Bransford, John Kotula, Stanley Edwards, MaryWalker, Ella Chapman, Miss Georgia Herod, Miss Jeanne Hafer, all of Patchogue; Mrs. Lawrence Weeks of Blue Point and Mrs. Edward Barth of Moriches.[27]

May 1951 - Confirmation of Luella: The Right Rev. Jonathan Sherman, suffragan bishop of the diocese of Long Island, bestowed the sacrament of confirmation at St. Paul's Episcopal church (Patchogue, New York) here at 11 a. m. Sunday on a class of 42 candidates (30 children and 12 adults).[28]

Birth Announcement 1/2: Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Kotula are parents of a daughter, Jeanne Anne, weighing 8 pounds, 10 ounces, who was born Monday at Southside Hospital, Bay Shore. Mrs. Kotula is the former Miss Louella Chapman.[29][30][31]

Birth Announcement 2/2: Mr. and Mis, Ludwig Kotula of Park street announce the birth of a daughter, Betty Lou, born in Southside hospital October 11, weighing 7 pounds 15 ounces. Bettv Lou has a sister, Jeanne.[39][40][41]

Christening: Betty Lou, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Kotula of Park street was christened by the Rev. Domenic K. Ciannella, at St. Paul's Episcopal church in Patchogue Sunday. Mr. and Mi's. July 1959 Luella attended a triple celebration to honor William G. Puis, Jr. who was graduated from high school, celebrating his birthday, and was leaving to serve his great nation in the US Navy.[48]

August 1959 Walter Adams entertained a group of friends in honor of his sixty-ninth birthday August 3 at his home at 217 Cedar avenue. Those present were...Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Kotula...[49]

September 1959 Mrs. John Mnclntyre of Holbrook was guest-ol'-honor at a stork shower given for her September 9 by Mrs. Richard Chapin and Miss Blanche Glasson at the rqctory of St. Paul's Episcopal church. Guests present included Mesdames...Mrs. Ludwig Kotula of Blue Point... The rectory was appropriately decorated and after all the lovely gifts had been opened the ladies enjoyed a. buffet supper.[50][51]

November 1960 PARISH DINNER at St. Paul's Episcopal Church is being planned by hostesses committee of church. Dinner will be held November 30 and will be highlight of current drive for funds to build addition to parish house....December 9. The hostesses committee members for the dinner were announced by Mrs. Arthur Leffert and Mrs. Dale Whitlock, co-chairmen of the committee. Following is a list of members:...Mrs. Ludwig Kotula...[53]

August 3, 1962 Miss Carolyn Louise Goll was guest-of-honor at a surprise bridal shower given by Mrs. Valerie Leffert and Mrs. Irene Flelschmann at Mrs. Leffert's home on Herbert Circle. Guests were Mesdames...LouelLa Kotula...After Miss Goll opened her many gifts a buffet was served.[54]

October 20 1962 A bridal shower ln honor of Miss Brenda Farldes was held October 20 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald McDowell on Columbia Street. The hostesses were Mrs. McDowell and Miss Corrine Von Rhee. The color scheme was carried out in white decorations and Fall-colored chrysanthemums. Miss Farldes sat under a beautifully decorated umbrella to open her many gifts. Guests were Mesdames...Ludwig Kotula...Miss Farldes will become the bride of Edward Erlckson of Pennsylvania November 24. [55]

December 1962 The visit of District 3 Commander Thomas F. Kiely highlighted the recent annual Christmas meeting of the Patchogue Bay Power Squadron held at tbe Suffolk Boat club. Commander Kiely addressed members briefly on efficiency and clarity of squadron programs. Past Commander Fred Pallas, N was complimented for the effective manner in which he ran the District Educational Conference held at Kings Point this Fall. Squadron Educational Officer George Wagner, N reported a proposed change in future piloting and navigation courses to be active in 1964. Past Commander Joseph CberubinL N,reported that...Ludwig J. Kotula...L.C. Kotula had successfully completed the squadron's seamanship course.[56]

May 1963 Mr. and Mrs. William G.Puls, Sr. of 9 Rose Street, East Patchogue, were the guests-of-honorat a surprise twenty-fifth anniversary party Saturday at The Whirlaway Inn, Bay Avenue, by their many friends and relatives. Arrangements were made...Every lady received a silver corsage. ...All tables were decorated with a centerpiece of silver bells. Guests were...Mr. and Mrs. Lou Kotula of Blue Point...[57]

June 1964 The following Girl Scout leaders, assistant leaders, officers and registered adult members attended the annual covered dish supper and meeting last Wednesday at Camp Edey:...Mrs. Ludwig Kotula...[58]

October 1964 Junior Girl Scout Troop 102 held a rededication candlelight ceremony for the new girls at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the school cafeteria. The mothers were invited to attend and refreshments were served....Mrs. Nicholas Alisero and Mrs. Richard Bartick are the co-leaders and Mrs. Ludwlg Kotula is the assistant leader.[59][60]

December 1964 The Blue Point Busy Beavers 4-H Club had «. Christmas party on Friday in the school cafeteria. The girls sang songs, played games and exchanged gifts after which refreshments were served. The guests included...Mrs. Ludwig Kotula. The 4-H leaders in charge were Mrs. Angelo Orlando, Mrs. Richard Clunan and Mrs. George Staudt. All 18 members also attended.[61]

July 1965 A court of awards ceremony for the three Girl Scout Junior Troops, 59, 60 and 102, was held in the Blue Point School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. June 4 at which time the girls received tie badges earned during the year and 21 of the sixth grade scouts graduated into the Cadettes. Leaders, Mesdames...Ludwig Kotula, were presented with bouquets from the girls. Most of the girls of Troop 59 earned their active citizen, toymaker and cooks badges which were worked on as a group, and most of Troop 60 earned their cyclist badge.[62]

Order of the Eastern Star - Old Glory Chapter #622 - initiated on November 19, 1962.  She was the chapter Matron during the 50th anniversary year, and District Deputy Grand Matron of Suffolk district in 1985. The chapter merged in 2015 with Metlakhatla chapter #439[65]

January 1965 - The annual Installation of officers of Old Glory Chapter 622, Order of the Eastern Star, was held January 14 at the Masonic Temple, Patchogue. The meeting was opened by Matron Lucille Faust^ who gave her farewell address, followed by a few remarks from Patron Herbert Faust...The following were Installed for 1965...Luella Kotula, Electa...[66]

January 9, 1969 - CHAPTER INSTALLATION PATCHOGUE — At the installation of officers of Old Glory Chapter 622, Order of the Eastem Star of the State of New York, January 9, at the Masonic Temple, West Main Street, with Mrs. Marilyn Bach, worthy matron, opening the meeting, Mrs. Gertrude Neill presented the past matrons' jewel to Mrs. Bach and Ludwig Kotula..., the patrons' gift to Herman Van Kleef. Joseph Cottrell, past district grand lecturer, assisted by Mrs. Bach, marshal; Mr. Van Kleef, assistant marshal; Mrs. Elinore H. Schmidt, chaplain; Mrs. Eunice Jones, secretary; Mrs.Hazel Roberts, warder, and Norman Neill, sentinal, installed the new officers, who are: Mrs. Luella C. Kotula, worthy matron; Ludwig J. Kotula, worthy patron...After Mrs. Kotula's greeting and acceptance speech, Worthy Patron Ludwig Kotula presented to his wife the gold gavel for her use during the year, the gold representing the fiftieth anniversary of Old Glory Chapter...[67]

March 1969 Mrs. Luella C. Kotula, worthy matron, presided at the regular meeting of Old Glory Chapter 622, Order of the Eastern Star, Thursday for the celebration of its fiftieth birthday...Saturday, Old Glory continued its Golden Anniversary with a dinner dance at Felice's of Patchogue, with 200 members and guests present. Herman vanKleef, general chairman, was assisted by the following committee:...Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Kotula...Each guest received as a memento of the occasion, a gold pen, inscribed, "Old Glory Chapter 622, O.E.S., 1919 - 1969."[68]

May 1969 Mrs. Ludwig J. Kotula, worthy matron, presided over the regular meeting and installation night of Old Glory Chapter 622, Order of the Eastern Star, May 8 at the Masonic Temple on West Main Street. Put into office were Mesdames Elizabeth Stewart, Francis Stewart, Meta Raddatz, Mary Louella Niemeyer and also Clive Davis and Richard N. Brigham. Mr. Brigham was also elected and installed as associate patron of the cliapter. Guests were present from Sayville, Islip and Huntington. The next meeting will be held May 22.[69]

May 1969 - EASTERN STAR MEETING PATCHOGUE - Mrs. Ludwig J. Kotula presided at the regular meeting May 22 of Old Glory Chapter No. 622, Order of the Eastern Star.[70]

April 1, 1985 - O.E.S. Meeting The next meeting of Mishannock Chapter 605, Order of the Eastern Star, Sag Harbor, will host the district leaders of Suffolk County on April 1, 1985, 8 p.m. Luella C. Kotula, District Deputy Grand Matron, and Carl Moodt, District Deputy Grand Lecturer, will make their annual visitation. All members of the Eastern Star are cordially invited to attend.[71]

OBITUARY: KOTULA - Luella C., on May 15, 2012 of Patchogue. Beloved wife of the late Ludwig. Devoted mother of Jeanne Kotula and the late Betty Ozer (Kotula). Loving grandmother of Matthew Koeppen, Michael Ozer, and Adam Ozer. Cherished great-grandmother of Matthew Koeppen Jr. Dearest sister of the late Emily Wicks. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Member of Old Glory Chapter #622 Order of the Eastern Star[72] Note: Luella's headstone has a 'C' listed for her middle initial, which stands for her maiden name - Chapman.[73]
