Biography

William Chappell was the son of Robert and Agnes Cross Chappell. He was born about 1776 in Virginia. His family moved to Wilkes County, GA, about 1788.
William married Margaret Cooper (c.1780-1861), daughter of Enos Cooper, about 1796 near or in Wilkes County.
Records indicate William bought land in Lincoln, Newton, and Walton Counties. He is in the 1830 census at Walton County, and in 1840 at Meriwether County.
On 8 Dec 1842, William recorded a Will. He mentions the following family by name: wife: Margaret; daughter: Mary Ann Amanda Chappell; sons: Henry Park and William; Susannah Lankford's children to have her share; executor [son]: John W. Chappell, and unnamed: "surviving children."
Piecing together information on his legatees, his children include:

Williams Obituary Notice

William's obituary notice was found in the So. Christian Advocate, Vol 1, p.631-632, Issue Dec. 26, 1845.[1]
William's exact burial location is unknown, and it is suspected the marker is lost.
The following is the obit of William Chappell taken from "Marriage and Death Notices from the Southern Christian Advocate, Vol. 1: 1837-1860". Issue of December 26, 1845. Died, Oct.18, 1845, at his residence in Merriwether Co., Ga., in the 70th year of his age, Wm. Chappell...son of Robert and Agnes Chappell ,and was born 1776 in Virginia. His parents moved to Wilkes Co., Ga., 1788... A. Pennington (Wilkes County was created in 1777)[2]

Residences and Assessments

William Chappell had 67 acres of land in Lincoln County adjacent to Thomas and Bibb in 1801. (Lincoln County was created in 1796 from part of Wilkes County)
William had 140 acres of land on Soap Creek in Lincoln County as shown on Tax assesses betwen 1805 and 1810. This land adjoined 100 acres of land that belonged to his Father Robert. Roberts land was shown on tax assesses between 1801 and 1810. His land was located on Mill Creek
1818 - Tax Digest shows that William owned 80 acres of land in the 4th land district on the waters of Sugar Creek in Morgan County, Ga. (Morgan County was created in 1807 from part of Baldwin County)
1820 - William does not apppear on census of any county in Ga. but does show on 1830 census of Walton County, Ga. which adjoins Morgan County. (Walton County was created in 1818 from Indian Lands)
1840 - William appears on the census records in Meriwether County.
1845 - Death - 18 October 1845.

William's Will

1845 - Will probated 3 November 1845. William Chappell mentioned the following children in his will dated, December 8, 1842 and recorded November 3rd, 1845, in Meriwether County, GA. (Probate Court). Mary Ann Amanda,, Henry Park, Susannah and William. Other children mentioned in the final probate were: Jesse, J.W. (Joihn Wesley) Jordan Spivey (Husband of daughter Sarah) A. Hancock and some grandchildren.[3]
