Mary Ann Chappell was born in Tipton, Staffordshire in 1854 to Samuel Chappell and Phoebe Gough.[1]
At 17 she was working as a draper's assistant in From, Somersetshire.[2] In 1881 she was employed as a Berlin wool repository assistant in the town of her father's family, Calne in Wiltshire.[3] A visitor on the day of the 1881 census was Mercy Wiltshire.
In 1881 Mary married Mercy's brother John, a baker and confectioner.[4] They had three children:
