Biography

Mary Ann Chappell was born in Tipton, Staffordshire in 1854 to Samuel Chappell and Phoebe Gough.^[1]

At 17 she was working as a draper's assistant in From, Somersetshire.^[2] In 1881 she was employed as a Berlin wool repository assistant in the town of her father's family, Calne in Wiltshire.^[3] A visitor on the day of the 1881 census was Mercy Wiltshire.

In 1881 Mary married Mercy's brother John, a baker and confectioner.^[4] They had three children:

• Evelyn May Wiltshire, born 1882;
• Hilda Mary Wiltshire, born 1883;
• Ethel Emma Wiltshire, born 1886.

Mary died in Chertsey, Surrey on 1919.^[5]
