Biography

This is the profile for George Chappell, the son of Alexander Chappell and Johan (Ellot) Chappell, who was baptized at Barnstaple, Devon, England on 28 May 1617.

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

George Chappell, son of Alexander Chappell and Johan (Ellot) Chappell, was baptized at Barnstaple, Devon, England on 28 May 1617.[1]

Marriage and Children

George married a woman named Agnes. The first name of his wife is established by George's will which named his "beloved wife Agnes Chappell" as his sole executrix.[2] Based on a bequest by George in his will to his "brother-in-law" Richard Jeffrey[2] and the fact that none of George's sisters are known to have married a man with the surname Jeffrey,[2] Agnes' maiden name was probably Jeffrey. No record of their marriage has yet been found. Based on the date of birth of their first child (August 1648), George and Agnes were probably married about 1647. Since their children were baptized in Barnstaple, Devon they were probably married in or near Barnstaple.

George and Agnes had the following children, all baptized at Barnstaple:

  1. Johan, bpt. 29 August 1648[3]
  2. Mary, bpt. 16 December 1650[4]
  3. Agnes, bpt. 6 August 1655[5]

Occupation

George's will states that he was a clothier.[2]

Will; Death

George made his will on 14 May 1655. In his will, he made bequests to his uncle Roger Elliot and his daughters Joane and Mary and the unborn child his wife was carrying, with all beequests to his children payable at the age of 21. He granted the remainder of his estate to his wife Agnes and appointed her as sole executrix. He appointed his cousin Edward Fairchild, Jeffrey Webber, uncle Roger Elliot and brother-in-law Richard Jeffrey as overseers.[2]

George's will was probated on 6 July 1655,[2] which means that George died sometime between 14 May 1655 and 6 July 1655.
