Biography

Puritan Great Migration
William Chappell immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for England.

An estimate for William Chappell's birth is 1605 in England.

He was the master of the Hercules[1]and migrated in 1636 to Richmond Island off the coast of Maine.[2][3]

A footnote on page 106 of the Trelawny Papers says "William Chappell, Thomas Abby, and George Newman were probably traders along the coast, who had dropped anchor temporarily at Richmond's Island, which was then an important place for traffic... this is probably the William Chappell who subsequently settled at New London, Connecticut."[4]

By 1637 he had returned permanently to England.[2]

Research Notes

  • See Bibliographic Note on p. 59 of "Great Migration", sketch of George Chappell.[1] where Anderson cites a 1996 work by Gale Ion Harris in NEHGR 150:48-73 concluding that William Chappell and George Chappell are not connected... but Anderson says this deserves further examination since William Chappell bought a six acre houselot bounded by land owned by George Chappell.
