Biography

1850 Born in

28 Aug 1853 Christened at Petersham, on the same day as his brother Joseph [1]

1862 Died after falling from a horse. Buried in the St Peter's graveyard in an unmarked grave (2,4,5)

1862 CORONER'S INQUEST -The City Coroner held an inquest at the Bold Forester Inn, Arncliffe, seven miles from Sydney, on Monday lost, on the body of a little boy, named John Chappelow, eleven years of age, who died on Sunday last. It appeared from the evidence that the deceased in company with other boys went into the bush on last Friday afternoon, for the purpose of falling a tree in the trunk of which was a bees' nest. While so engaged, a Mr. Hammon, jeweller, of King-street, was riding through the bush, and came upon the boys.- The rider having dismounted, one of the boys requested to be allowed to have a short ride. The horse being very quiet, the request was granted ; and subsequently the deceased, ' at his own request, was permitted to ride also. Hardly had he mounted when the horse- went off in a canter and threw the boy, and one of his feet having caught the stirrup leather, he was dragged for some 'distance ; when released he was found to be insensible. He was at once removed to his parents' house, and a medical man sent for ; but, owing to some difficulty in getting one to go out, no medical man saw him till the following day, when Dr. Woodcock arrived at the house, and found the child in a comatose state from concussion of the brain. The injured boy expired at one o'clock on Sunday. Verdict, Died from injuries accidentally received by falling off a horse." (2)

According to the parish register (seen on Ancestry), although John and Joseph were both baptised on the same day (28 August 1853), John was born on 19 August 1850 and Joseph was born 15 September 1852.
