1853 Below is an advertisement placed in the SMH in 1853. John's eldest child would be 17 by now, his youngest not yet born. Following the notice is a Subscription list, including their son Ralph's name, acknowledging a donation of 5 pounds from David and 1 pound from Ralph, who was 17 at the time.
COOK'S RIVER SCHOOLHOUSE, now erected on a piece of land (half an acre) given by David Hannam, Esq, of the parish of Saint George, in the County of Cumberland, to the poor residents of the neighborhood, for the purpose of Education. Trustees : Mr. Thomas Curtis Mr. John Chappelow Mr. Francis Corr. Secretary and Treasurer : Mr. David Hannam.
1854 On June 2, 1854, John bought 119 acres at Kogarah Bay NSW. The area now known as Carss Bush Park was originally part of Jonathon Crofts' 54 hectares of land which was purchased from the crown in 1854. Crofts only held it for 5 weeks. The title deed records the sale of the land to John Chappelow of Georges River with all houses, outhouses, edifices, buildings, ways, paths, passages, waters, watercourses, easements, etc. and the document also mentions Chappelow's enjoyment of premises. From this document, it appears that John was already living on the site when the sale was finalized in June 1854 and that there was a dwelling on the property. Part of the land was heavily wooded making a clearing for cultivation difficult. The soil was poor and did not lend itself to gardening but there were other valuable resources on the property, timber, sandstone, and shell for lime. Having worked for Frewin Sleath, John had mastered the art stone cutting and considered himself a stonemason. Timber was a much sought after commodity which had illegal tree-fellers intruding on the site.
1855
Their youngest son Richard was born on October 22, 1855, at Kogarah Bay Georges River and that same month John mortgaged his two properties at Kogarah Bay and Arncliffe to Lewis Gordon for 300 pounds, but the description of the properties is ambiguous and does not define the position or description of the houses. The family moved back to Arncliffe leaving a caretaker on the property to protect the timber. On January 7, 1863, Lewis Gordon sold the land at Kogarah Bay in a mortgagee sale to William Carss for 540 pounds. The origin of the name Carlton in the St. George District of NSW has always bee shrouded in mystery. But it is a name associated with the Chappelow family as John's grandparents lived and died there. Could it be that John gave the name Carlton to his estate at Kogarah Bay? Carlton Crescent starts in the center of the estate and runs north to connect the estate to Kogarah which was the nearest township.(11)
