Biography

Thomas Charette was born on September 17, 1843 in the village of Saint Francois immediately north of the Maine border in New Brunswick (it was the Madawaska settlement in Acadia at the time). He was the second of eight children of Louis Charest and Delina Dumont.

He married Sophia Gagnon[1][2] on April 8, 1866 in St. Bruno, Van Buren, Maine.

He had the following children:

  1. Thomas Charette b. 1866, d. 1884
  2. Amanda Charette b. 1868
  3. Sophia Charette b. 1870
  4. Mary Ann Charette b. 1872
  5. Octave Charette b. 1873
  6. Delphina Charette b. 1875
  7. George Charette b. 1877
  8. Pheobe Charette b. 1879
  9. Charles Charette b. 1881
  10. Abel Louis Charette b. 1882
  11. Leonard Charette b. 1884
  12. Napoleon Charette b. 1886
  13. Arthur Charette b. 1887
  14. Jean Baptiste Charette b. 1888
  15. Louise Charette b. 1889

Sometime between 1884 and 1886 the whole family started moving south. Thomas would work on farms along the way for money. His goal was to move to Swansea, Massachusetts to live with relatives. But by the time he and his family reached the area, the harvest was over. So he got work in a textile mill. They had several more children in Fall River.

He died on April 25, 1929, in Fall River, Massachusetts. He was buried in Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.
