Hello Susan,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Thank you Cheryl. I am finding it really helpful to relocate my family tree from Ancestry.com to Wikitree as it has forced me to re-examine many of my sources, and to make sometimes difficult decisions about whether or not people really were ancestors. When I have weeded out some dodgy customers and got my information in order will be a good time to examine some other websites to see if I can get any further back.

Hi

One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that others found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

Thanks for your suggestions. It is taking me some time to get to grips with all the information, advice and suggestions available. Not to mention all the new techie stuff which previously has been a closed book to me - I feel I am now on the Preface.

Hi Susan,

the technology is not as complicated as it looks at first glance. You should try it. We all started without knowledge. We are at your disposal if you have any questions.

Take your time, keep track of sources, and make sure you ask a lot of questions. There are many helpful folks who are more than happy to help you get started.

Take care

I entered Mary Morgan as wife to William Charlton; unfortunately I got the wrong William Charlton. I have now corrected this on the profiles, I think successfully, but when I look at my tree the mistake is still there. Does it take some time to change or have I omitted a vital step? Thanks.

Hi Susan,

Changes are implemented immediately. I'm sure you can still see the connection because the son is still connected to both of them. You have to disconnect the son from the wrong father. I hope it helps.

Take care

Hi Susan,

For ease in transferring your ancestors there is a helpful walk-through you can check out and see if it helps you. As for Ancestry sources you would quote what the record is, not just the site (For example: Rockingham County, New Hampshire Marriage Records, Ancestry.com, entry for John Smith and Jane Doe, 3 Aug 1865).

Best of luck with your research!

Thank you Mindy.

I have been researching my tree on Ancestry.com. I would like to transfer my data; is there a quick way of doing this? No problem if not, I will just enter everybody bit by bit. Is Ancestry, com regarded as a safe source? I don't see it mentioned anywhere in the sources help section. Susan
