Biography
Joseph was born in 1927 in Chicopee, Massachusetts to Beatrice Cresiski and Donald Charpentier. He grew up in Chicopee and was pretty much raised by his mother, his father being estranged from the family but appears to have had a close relationship with his paternal grandfather, Albert Charpentier and in the midst of a large, tight knit extended family of Charpentiers who lived on Orchard Street in Chicopee. The family later moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut.
He did not finish high school but left to work at Sikorsky Aircraft Company in support of the war effort. He joined the U.S. Army Air Force, later U.S. Air Force, in the weather service as an observer and forecaster for over 20 years.
