Charteris, Francis (c.1665–1732), gambler and rake, was born in or near Edinburgh, probably about 1665 (some ten years earlier than the 1675 date inferred from the Edinburgh obituary printed in many London newspapers shortly after his death), the son of John Charteris (d. in or before 1702), gentleman, who sometimes held the office of magistrate in Edinburgh, and his wife, possibly the daughter of Sir Francis Kinloch. The Charteris family had for four centuries held property at Amisfield near Dumfries. His grandfather, Sir John Charteris, had been a royalist. Francis Charteris became the male representative of the Charteris line. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
