Joseph Chase was born in 1824 in Hanover, New Hampshire to Harvey Herman Chase and his second wife Persey Hall Chase.
He moved to Lowell, Massachusetts as a young boy and was soon working in the mills. He and his brother eventually purchased mills at Dracut that were known for years as the Chase Mills. He was also an agent in the Blackstone mills.
He married Rachel Harvell of Madison, Maine, in Manchester, New Hampshire 21 June 1847. She was the daughter of Joseph Harvell and Sarah/Sally Unknown Harvell. Their first child, Frederic Adelbert Chase, was born in Blackstone, Massachusetts in 1848. The couple had three more children in Massachusetts: Grace Theresa, Josepha Percy, and Joseph Harville Chase.
Joseph died of heart failure in Boston, Massachusetts 2 April 1885 at the age of 60 years and 7 months. He was residing, at the time, at 51 Chestnut Street.
