Stephen was born about 1835. He was the son of Ephraim Chase and Hannah Hopper.

In the 1850 census, Stephen (age 15) was in East Machias, Washington, Maine, United States his parents, Ephraim and Hannah, and his siblings.^[1]

Stephen married Phebe A Durgan on 20 January 1865 in East Machias, , Maine, United States.^[2]
