Biography

Notables Project
Grace (Chase) Whitney is Notable.

Born Mary Ann Chase, She was adopted and name changed to Grace Elaine Whitney, She later changed her name to Grace Lee Whitney when she became a public figure. She is most well known for her role as Yeoman Janice Rand on Star Trek, but has actually appeared on several other films, has been on Broadway in the theater, appeared on numerous television shows, had a talent for singing and was on several recordings including orchestral, pop/jazz, and genre-themed music related to Star Trek. She also wrote an autobiography of her life.

She was married twice - first to Sydney Stevan Dweck (28 December 1954 - 1966 - divorced), and then to Jack Dale (Feb 14, 1970 - 1991 - divorced). Sydney and Grace had two children (Jonathan Dweck and Scott Dweck - later changed to Whitney).

Scott appeared on Star Trek as well in one episode (Miri) as a small child, and he also appeared with his mother in Star Trek the Motion Picture as a Vulcan Medic.

Grace became addicted to drugs and alcohol during her acting career, and struggled with this for many years. She turned her life around at one point and became dedicated to helping others overcome their addictions as well. As a result of her success in breaking her addictions, she remained free of her addictions for more than 35 years of the end of her life (approximately 1980 on).

Grace passed away of natural causes at her home on Coarsegold, California May 1, 2015. She was cremated and her ashes given to a friend.

Hi Dennis. The biography is accurate. It states: "Born Mary Ann Chase, She was adopted and name changed to Grace Elaine Whitney."

So it is true that on the 1940 Census she was using the name Grace E. Whitney, as she had been adopted in 1930 and what is shown on the 1940 Census is her with her adopted parents. So Gordon Whitney and Givah Corinne Pugh are not her biological parents.
