Biography

According to family sources, Almy Chase was born circa 1732, in Rhode Island[1], and possibly christened 6 December 1744. She may have been the daughter of Nathan Chase and Elizabeth Shaw, as shown in these family trees, or of Captain John Chase and Ann Arnold - a visit to the Rhode Island Archives may be needed to search for information[2] Do you have more information? On 3 November 1748 she married Thomas Pierce in Trinity Church, Newport Rhode Island[3] (Note: Almy died after 30 June 1800)

Their children included:

  1. John, who married Nelly
  2. Thomas Jr, who born circa 1763[4], who died before 1792. Perkins notes his marriage, but doesn't provide his wife's name. He worked as a cooper
  3. Josiah – yeoman in Liverpool in 1792 – Perkins describes him as a ships master in 1793
  4. James maried Martha Hewitt and Hannah Ridgeway; he died after 1845
  5. Persis born in Newport in 1750, married George Giffin and then Robert Dickson
  6. Amy married Joseph Mills May 17, 1781, and died after 1819 in Indian Harbour, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia
  7. Elsie married Nicholas Goodwin, of Berwick Maine

The family moved to Nova Scotia in 1863, according to Almy's memorial, published in the Nova Scotia Land Papers[5]. She states they settled in New Dublin, then Liverpool, Port Joly and in 1778 settled in Sable River. Thomas died without a will, so Almy's memorial was provided as part of a request that the 30 acres in Sable River be granted to her sons John, Josiah, and James.

The Queens County deed records[6] shows Thos Pierce purchased a house on the western side of Liverpool Harbour on December 19, 1864

Perkins notes – 1779: Thursday, Feb 18th Thomas Pierce, Persis (widow Giffin) Amy and Elsie in jail. Taken out of house bey Lieutanant Stuart with a party of officers in the night and are accused by the soldiers of assisting them in deserting and buying some clothing of them. Perkins waited on Capt Howard, who agreed to discharge the two girls, but the complaint was filed against Thomas, his wife and widow Giffin (Persis). They were fined and released.

This profile shows her death occurred after the memorial, which was dated 1789[5]
