Daughter of Valentine Chastain and Sarah J. Wade.
cousin of Amanda Ellen Chastain. After her death in 1863, Stephen married Amanda's cousin Lucinda Chastain in December 1864. Lucinda was the widow of John Henry Warren and had four sons (Louis Alonzo, Christian Silas, Henry Franklin, and Harvey Newton).
Stephen and Lucinda were the parents of Sarah Ella (Cornwell) and Laura.
