Biography

It is possible that Frances is a member of Pendelton /Pickens Chastains. To be determined.

Records

1840 Census - for John M Smith in District 849, Cass, Georgia.[1] John Smith was on the same page as Elizabeth Kelly and Jane (Kelly) Chastain (mother and daughter living next to each other, both widowed). John Smith was listed one door down from William Kelly (Jr) and S. R. Kelly. The Kellys had just moved from McMinn Co, TN (paid TN taxes in 1836) to Cass Co, GA. Elizabeth Kelly's husband, William Kelly, died in Cass Co, GA, on 27 Dec 1837. (His pension file documents these details and names his children.) Elizabeth and William Kelly's daughter, Jane Kelly-Chastain, was a widow in 1830. Jane was a HOH in McMinn Co, TN, listed next to her father and brothers. Then in 1840, Jane Kelly-Chastain was HOH living close to John Smith in Cass Co, GA. Frances and John Smith's oldest child was born in about 1836 in GA. All things considered, it's believed that Frances was a daughter of Jane Kelly-Chastain and Obediah Chastain, Sr.

1850 Census - Division 12, Gordon, Georgia.[2] Frances (family #411) was living close to her brother (family #409) James W. 'Jim' Chastain (abt.1826-bef.1909). Furthermore, (family #398) Jane Kelly-Chastain and her son Obediah Chastain, Jr. were also living in Division 12, Gordon Co. The Smith household included John Smith 36, Frances Smith 40, L C Smith 13 (born about 1837), William M Smith 11, Sarah Smith 10, Amanda E Smith 8, Louisa K Smith 6, Mary C Smith 4, Nancy E Smith 3, F M Smith 1.

Boundary Change - Original 1850 boundaries were changed numerous times between 1852 to 1877; transferred portions of Cass (Bartow), Floyd, Murray, Pickens & Walker to Gordon Co, while transferring land from Gordon to Floyd and Murray. (georgiainfo.galileo.usg.edu accessed 2012). Note: Cass County was later dissolved, reportedly after the Civil War.

  • Several Chastain brothers appear on the 1852 Tax list for Gordon Co, GA, before being rezoned and/or moving into Pickens Co, GA.

1860 Census - Freemans, Gordon, Georgia.[3]

1870 Census - Gordon, Georgia.[4]

1880 Census - Widowed head of household in Twenty-Fourth, Gordon, Georgia.[5]
