Biography

Anne (Chastain) de Richebourg was a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Parentage

One Mrs. J. W. T of Atlanta, Georgia a descendant of CLAUDE PHILIPPE DE RICHEBOURG had provided a copy of a manuscript relating to DE RICHEBOURG, which was compiled by the late Dr. Robert Wilson, of the Citadel at Charleston, S. C. The manuscript states that he (Claude Phillippe) married ANNE CHASTAIN and further traces their children. The manuscript surmises that ANNE CHASTAIN was probably the daughter or sister of Dr. Castaing or Castayne one of the two surgeons who accompanied the Huguenots to Manakin Town. The manuscript accepts the that DE RICHEBOURG took Anglican orders.

Husband and Family

THE HUGUENOT: CLAUDE PHILIPPE DE RICHBOURG came to Manakin Town on the "Mary and Ann" 7-23-1700; married before leaving France, ANN CHASTAIN; they had John who died 1748; Rene who died 1740, married Catherine Peyre; James; Charles; Claudius; Elizabeth. About 1712-1713, CLAUDE P. DE RICHEBOURG moved to the Huguenot colony at Jamestown in S. C.; there he succeeded the ages Pierre Robert as pastor of the church in 1715. He died 1718-1719 and his will in French at one time at the Public Office in Charleston, can no longer be found. His wife, ANNA CHASTAIN and six children survived him, the children being of tender age. Though the dates of birth of the children are not known, it is thought that they were born in the following order: Charles, Rene, John, James, Claudius, and Elizabeth. The will of Pierre de St. Julian of Berkeley Co., S. C. dated 6-2-1718 mentions 20 pds to Monsieur CLAUDE PHILLIPE DE RICHEBOURG, minister. The will of Isaac Porcher of S.C. dated 9-25-1726 mentions his wife's godsons and goddaughters, the children of late Mr. RICHEBOURG.

References to Anne

There is an advertisement in the Gazette of March 17, 1764 offering a tract of 200 acres of land in St. James, Santee, for sale. This advertisement was placed by Claudius Richebourg, and recites that it was originally a tract of land granted to John Barnett in 1705, who conveyed it to my mother, ANN DE RICHBOURG and directs that anyone interested treat with Mr. Peper Porcher in Charles Towne, where the deeds may be seen, or with the subscriber in St. Mark's Parish, about 25 miles from Nelson's Ferry. It is signed by Claudius Richebourg.

Research Notes

Anne Chastain, daughter of Estienne Chastain and Jeanne Laurent, was born on 8 February 1655 in Chârost and baptised on 21 February the same year. Her godfather was Jean Chastain, her godmother Susanne Jupillee[1]. She was baptised exactly 30 years before this Anne Chastain, whose story is deducted from secondary sources.

History of the Presbyterian Church in SC - The French Church at Jamestown on the Santee, enjoyed the labors of Pierre Robert; received an accession to their ministers in Rev Claude Philippe de Richebourg, who removed from Trent River in NC to Jamestown in 1712. He was pastor of colony of French refugees who King Wm had sent to VA 1690 & settled at Manakin Town, They were joined in 1699 by 300 & in 1700 by 200. From this settlement they were driven by a rising of the Tuscarora & Coree Indians. A Massacre took place 11 Sep 1711. 111 persons were victims. Richebourg & others went to SC. He appears to have been a man of unobtrusive manners, deep & fervent piety & serious temper of mind. Adversities & poverty have been his portion in the lot of life. 2 or 3 yrs after his removal to SC lived without spiritual charge & without any pecuniary resources for maintenance of his family. We are informed by Humphrey, he contemplated a removal out of the colony, 'on account of his great want'. His WILL <13 Jan 1718-19 has not been found since this book was published) His wife, Anne CHASTAIN & 6 children survived him. Miss statements have been made by writers of historical sketches of the Huguenots. Richebourg was not the first minister of the church on the Santee.
