Notes for Rene Chastain: "Rene or Renny Chastain, St., was born in the state of Virginia in about the year 1776, according to census records.He died in Vernon Township, Washington County, Indiana, on May 23, 1860, aged 'about 84 years."he died of "old age" after an illness of two months.He is buried at Old Union Cemetery, Rene Chastain was married to Martha 'Massy' Robbins, September 19, 1795, in Franklin County, Virginia.The marriage bond was date on September 17, 1795, and witnessed by Valentine Chastine and William Robbins.Randolph Hall, Preacher for Pigg River Baptist Church performed the ceremony.Massy Robbins was born in North Carolina about the year 1778 and died in Vernon Township, Washington County, Indiana, on February 14, 1863 at the age of 84 years.She is also buried at Old Union Cemetery.She was a daughter of Jacob and Mary Robbins who moved from North Carolina to Franklin County, Virginia, after the Revolution. They lived there about 25 years and then moved to the counties of Henry and Shelby in Kentucky in the early 1800s.Other children of Jacob and Mary Robbins were:Mary, who married Valentine Chastain of Scott County, Indiana; Jacob, who married Rachel Robbins on November 15, 1790; William, who is said to have died in Decatur County, Indiana, in 1834, and Absalom. Renny Chastain appears on the tax list of Franklin County, Virginia, only for the years of 1796 and 1797.He possibly moved to another county in Virginia as his son, Absalom, claimed to have been born in that state about 1798.Renny owned no land in Franklin County. Apparently the first of 'our' Chastains to move to Kentucky, he first paid taxes inn Shelby County, Kentucky, on March 30, 1802.On July 10, 1806, he first paid taxes on Floyd's Fork in Henry County.Renny and wife, 'Massa,' became members of the East Fork Baptist Church in Henry County by 'experience' on October 5, 1805.In August of 1815, they were granted letters of dismissal 'when they call for them.' Renny evidently came to Washington County, Indiana, at about the same time his brother, Barnett Chastain, did.Both last paid their taxes in Henry County, Kentucky, for the year 1814.The first record I found of him buying land in Washington County was in April of 1820 when he purchased land in Section 25, next to Lost River from James and Elizabeth (Chastain) Manning.On February 19, 1828, Howard Utts was fined $3. for assaulting Rane Chastain at Chastain's 'own house raising near J. Hungates.'This could also refer to his son, Ren, who was married in 1826, and probably does.The R. Shasteen mentioned in records of Claysville Baptist as being present from Union Church in April of 1851 evidently refers to Ren Chastain. Ren Chastain made no will nor was his estate entered for probate so identification of his children must be made by quit claim deeds in his estate.These deeds indicate eight children as his land was divided into eight parts. The eight who sold their interest were: Absalom Chastain, Elizabeth Ruberson, Margaret Clark, Ren Chastain, Jr., Valentine Chastain, Hannah C. Robbins, Abner Chastain, and James Chastain."
