Biography

Elnathan was born about 1733 in Derby, Connecticut. He was the third child of Ebenezer Chatfield & Abigail Prindle.

Elnathan was married on Sep 12, 1754, Hannah Northrup in Milford, New Haven, Connecticut. Vital records at Milford, New Haven County list marriage of Elnathan & Hannah Northrup but they seem to have had the actual marriage ceremony in Woodbridge, New Haven, CT. These are their known children:

  1. Rebecca Chatfield Sanford (1755 - 1805)[1]
  2. Joel Chatfield (1757 - 1836)[2]
  3. Isaac Chatfield (1762 - 1780)[3]
  4. Sarah Chatfield Sanford (1771 - 1802)[4]

Seymour Past & Present states he purchased land on Mar 24, 1762. He built a saw mill and a corn mill which he passed on to his oldest son Joel in 1778, who built a much larger mill on the west side, two stories in height, the first mill being only one story and a half.

Elnathan lived just east of what is now the Seymour line, on the north side of Bladens Brook. This was within the limits of the town of Milford until Jan 1784, when the town of Woodbridge was incorporated. When the town of Bethany was incorporated in 1832, and Bladens Brook was made a part of the boundary, the site of the house was in Bethany. The house was a few rods north of the house afterward occupied by Oliver S. Chatfield and now owned by his daughter Mrs. F.C. Ford, which is crossed by the Seymour and Woodbridge town line. [5]

Elnathan passed away before Aug 1778 (age 45), in either Derby or Milford, New Haven, Connecticut. He is buried at Trinity Cemetery (no headstone to be found). [6]
