During the Civil War he enlisted in Company B, 33rd IL Volunteers and participated in several battles before losing his right forearm on May 17, 1863 the Battle of Big Black River Bridge, MS. Following the war he was a tax collector in Lisle, IL until 1869, at which time he briefly lived in Anamosa, IA between 1871 and 1876. He then moved to Sycamore, IL where he was tax collector until 1880 when he moved to Washington, DC to become a clerk in the US Treasury Dept. Funeral services at his late residence on Friday, July 20, at 3 p.m. Interment in Rock Creek Cemetery.
CHATFIELD, ALONZO B. of Washington D.C., b. in Lisle, Ill. Oct. 25, 1842, educated in public schools and Naperville Academy, was enlisted in co. B. 33d Ill. vols. 1861, served in several battles, lost his right forearm at battle of Big Black River Bridge, Miss. May 17, 1863, attended commercial college in Chicago, tax collector in Lisle 3 terms, deputy circuit clerk and ex-officio recorder there some years, real estate and insurance agent in Chicago, 1869-1871, merchant in Anamosa, Iowa, 1871, removed to Sycamore, Ill. 1876, tax collector there 2 terms, clerk in U. S. treasury dept. at Wash. since 1880 [m. 1st May 16, 1867 Emma L. Smith, dau, of Charles and Harriet N.] and had Charles B. and Albert S., m 2d Sep 25, 1879 Mrs. Hattie E. (Nims) Chatfield b. in Fitchville (Ohio) [dau. of James F. and Louisa J. Nims], and had Alonzo B. Jr., Ethel, Louisa and Edward N.]
