Son of Robert Cheddar (d.1384) of Bristol, by Joan, daughter and coheir of Simon Hanham of Gloustershire. Married before 1403, Elizabeth (c.1379-bef. 1428), daughter and heir of Robert Cantelo of Heddington, Wiltshire. MP for Somerset 5 times between 1407-1427 [1]
His father was "a successful Bristol cloth exporter, who was mayor of the city in 1361-2 and 1363-4, and whose wealth was proverbial."
On the day of his mothers death Richard was her heir, but he died two months later on 8 June 1437.[2]
The Cheddar inheritance passed to his younger brother Thomas. Shortly before Thomas died he passed half the inheritance to Richard's illegitimate son John. The other half went to Thomas's kinsman, William Seward. Richard also had a daughter "daughter Jane, wife of Thomas Wykes, esquire" who inherited from her mother's estates.[3]
