Biography

Israel Cheever was involved in the Salem Witch Trials

Israel was baptized January 26, 1661, the son of Daniel and Esther Cheever, of Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts[1] [2] [3]

On June 10, 1690, he married married Bridget Woodhead[4] [2] [5] [3][6], and their children included:

  1. William baptized 15 Aug 1697[1] in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA, who married Miriam Cleveland, daughter of Aaron[2]
  2. Esther, bp. Aug. 15, 1697[1], who married Rev. Henry Messenger on January 5, 1720[7]
  3. Daniel, born June 28, 1693[8], and baptized Aug. 15, 1697[1]
  4. James, Dec. 27, 1798[1] bp. Mar. 19, 1699[9]
  5. John, Aug. 25, 1702[1]

Israel Cheever passed away before September 11, 1706, when his estate passed probate.[10]

Salem Witch Trials

He was Keeper of the Cambridge Prison during the Salem Witch Trials, succeeding his father, Daniel in that position.[11] By 1693, he was officially named Keeper, and in 1699, he was made Keeper of the House of Correction at Cambridge.[12]
