Joseph Cheney's birth is recorded in the Newtown town records, however a date is not provided.[1] He was the son of Daniel and Sarah (Bailey) Cheney, and was named in the settlement of his father's estate on 01 August 1698 while still a minor.[2]
He married Sarah Wiswall of Newton, Middlesex, after intentions were published in Newbury on 14 November 1702.[3] Sarah was the daughter of Noah and Theodocia (Jackson) Wiswall born Newton on 05 January 1680.

Father's probate:
On 01 August 1698, the children of Daniel Cheny late of Newberry deceased intestate, made an agreement to divide the property of Daniel Cheney. The children named were Daniel Cheney, John Cheny, Joseph Cheny, Jeames Cheny, John Richards "who married with Sarah Cheney now Richards," John Emerson "who married with Judith Cheney now Emerson," Thomas Wiswell "who married with Hannah Cheny now Wiswell" & Elenor Cheny now Satchell (widow). The agreement apportioned the estate as 2/9 parts To Daniel Cheney the eldest son; 2/9 to John Cheney; 1/9 to Joseph Cheney; 1/9 to James Cheney; to John Richards, husband of Sarah Cheney received already a house and lands and the balance of the 1/9 part to be paid out; to John Emerson who married Judith Cheny 1/9 part; to Richard Jackman, attorney for "mr. Thomas Wisewell of New Towne" who married Hanah Cheney, and of Eloner the daughter of Daniel Cheney deceased formerly Satchell, widdow, and now Safford. Jackman having purchased the said rights before the division of estate. 2/9 portion to Hanah & Eloner.[2]
