Biography

Eleanor (Cheney) Johnson immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Eleanor (Cheney) Johnson is related to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Here is the trail.

Eleanor Cheney was born about 1626 in Suffolk, England the daughter of William and Margaret Cheney who were ancestors of President Taft. She married Humphrey Johnson 20 March 1642 at Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts. She died 29 September 1678 at Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Children of Eleanor and Humphrey:

  1. Mehitable, b. Sept. 1644, (or Jan. 29, 1646), Roxbury, Mass.; m. Samuel Hinsdale, son of Deacon Robt. Hinsdale, who with three sons, one of whom was Samuel, was killed by the Indians, who attacked them while they were working in their cornfields, on the same day as the Battle at Bloody Brook. She married 2nd Robt. Root, who was also killed by Indians.
  2. Martha, bapt. Sept. 12, 1647, Roxbury, Mass.; d. 1714.
  3. Deborah, b. Jan. 20, 1650. Roxbury, Mass.
  4. John, b. Mar. 1653, Roxbury, Mass.; d. June 12, 1674, drown at Hingham, Mass.; m. Rebecca Hershey June 11, 1683. Her sister, Deborah, m. Samuel Lincoln, brother of Mordacai, ancestor of Abraham Lincoln.
  5. Benjamine b. Aug 27, 1657. Scituate,. Mass. d. Mar. 26, 1707
  6. Margaret Johnson, b. Dec. 2'2, 1659, Scituate, Mass.
  7. Deborah, b. 1661, Scituate, Mass.; d. Apr. 1, 1669.
  8. Mary, b. Apr. 19, 1663, Scituate, Mass.
  9. Nathaniel, b. Jan., 1666; bapt. July, 1666, Hingham, Mass.
  10. Isaac, b. Feb. 18, 1667/8; d. 1735.

It dies not say she belongs to the U. S. President Direct Descendant category. It says that she was related to him. Go to the box that says that & click on the trail & it will show you how she was related.

Eleanor's bother Thomas Cheney, had son Benjamin, had son William 1717-1775 killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill (dar.org)
