Biography

Edward Cherleton (or Charleton), K.G., 5th Lord Cherleton, feudal lord of Powis, Montgomeryshire, younger son of John de Cherleton, Knt., 3rd Lord Cherleton, and Joan de Stafford, was born about 1371 (aged 30 in 1401).^[1][2][3]

Edward was heir to his older brother, Sir John de Cherleton, 4th Lord Cherleton, in 1401. He was summoned to Parliament from 2 December 1401 to 26 February 1421, by writs directed Edwardo de Cherleton, or Charleton de Powys.^[1][3] Edward was recommended by Parliament in 1406 "for his good and faithful services" and was created Knight of the Garter by the end of that year.^[4]

Marriages and Children

Edward married first after 19 June 1399 (date of license) Eleanor Holand, widow of Sir Roger Mortimer, Earl of March and Ulster, Lord Mortimer, and eldest daughter of Thomas de Holand, K.G., 2nd Earl of Kent, by Alice de Arundel.^[1][3] They had two daughters:

• Joan, born about 1400/1, died 17 September 1425, wife of Sir John Grey, K.G., 1st Count of Tancarville^[1]
• Joyce, wife of Sir John Tiptoft, K.B., 1st Lord Tiptoft and Powis^[1]

His wife, Eleanor, died 23 October 1405, in childbirth.^[1][3]

Edward married second before 1408 Elizabeth Berkeley, daughter of Sir John Berkeley of Beverstone, Gloucestershire, by Elizabeth Betteshorne.^[3] They had no issue.^[1]

Death

Sir Edward Cherleton died testate on 14 March 1420/1,^[1]without male heirs.^[3][4][5] On Edward's death, the Barony created by the writ of 1313 "fell into abeyance between his two daughters and coheirs by his first wife".^[3] His widow, Elizabeth married second John Sutton (or Dudley), K.G., 1st Lord Dudley and they had issue. Elizabeth died before 8 December 1478.^[1][3]
