Biography

Kati was the daughter of the famous Cherokee Nan-ye-hi "Nancy" Ward and her first husband, Kingfisher. She was born at at time when Cherokee people did not have "last" or family names and their clan was their family. Ka-ti was a member of the Wolf Clan. Her birthdate is unknown but is estimated at 1752-53 since her mother was born about 1735 and her father was killed in battle in 1755. Emmet Starr listed her as "Catherine" but records only list her as 'Kati,' 'Katie,' or 'Katy'. [1] Kati had three white husbands, Samuel Candy, John Walker, and Ellis Harlan, and nine children. Nothing is known of her first two husbands but their names. Ka-ti married trader Ellis Harlan about 1778. She had one son, Samuel Candy, Jr. with her first husband and one son, John Walker and one daughter, Jennie Walker with her second husband.

Following is a list of her children with her third husband Ellis Harlan:[2][3]

  1. George Harlan (~1781 - 1848)
  2. Nancy (Harlan) Starr (~1779 - 1841)
  3. Ezekiel Harlan (~1783 - 1817)
  4. Ruth (Harlan) Phillips (~1787 - 1845)
  5. Sarah "Sally" (Harlan) West (~1789 - Oct 1837)
  6. Ellis Harlan (~1791 - 1791)
  7. Elizabeth (Harlan) Hildebrand (15 Aug 1793 - 19 Sep 1826)
  8. Katie Harlan (~1795 - 1795)

Ellis Harlan died about 1815. In 1817 Kati, her mother, her daughter Jenny and ten other women signed a petition opposing yet another land cession. [4] She took a reservation of land at 'Pumpkin Town" in 1818, but was unable to take possession. She filed a claim for the land which was disallowed. [5]

She was a slave owner. In 1826, she attempted to transfer slaves she had inherited from her brother, Five Killer, to her daughter, Sarah (Harlan) West. These slaves were "a Negroe woman named Quate and her two children Lose and Suse."[6]

Kati died about 1830. She is known to have been alive in 1824, but was not mentioned by her Harlan children when they went to court over a bill due to their father from losses during the Revolutionary War in the 1830's.[7]

Moytoy-227 and Cherokee-62 do not represent the same person because: Moytoy-227 is fictional and has no connection to Katy Harlan, Cherokee-62. Whoever Abraham Nations wife was she was not named “Moytoy” because there is no Moytoy family. Also unlikely that she was Rebecca Mataoka Pocahontas, the names of a Virginia woman who died in 1617. In 1750 Alabama was mostly French and occupied by the Creek and Chickasaw Indians. There were few whites.

Kingfisher-12 and Cherokee-62 appear to represent the same person because: Same vitals. Use tribe name (Cherokee) as LNAB

Although Kati Harlan has many descendants who can be confirmed as related to one another, she and her parents are not "DNA confirmed." Matches this far back require triangulation and matching DNA for multiple people for whom this is their most recent common ancestor. Confirming relationships using more distant cousin matches requires triangulation. Three or more cousins need to all match each other on a single segment of DNA that is at least 7cM long. Seven cM is a bare minimum and presumes that the cousins' relationship back to their most recent common ancestor(s) is well-documented. Most of Kati's descendants have multiple common ancestors due to the high level of intermarriage among her descendants so it's likely that Kati is not their most recent common ancestor.

Although all of the "DNA Connections" listed here have a paper trail back to Kati, matching Joe Parks (my dad who is the closest relative) to all the others who are on Gedmatch turns up only one match, and that person shares a common ancestral pair three generations later (he is my dad's second cousin twice removed).

Kati has a duplicated daughter, Jennie Walker. Jennie Walker Taylor McIntosh is the correct profile. The duplicate , Walker-48000, is part of a mythical line and has a non-existent spouse and incorrect child attached. There was no “Charles Thomas Taylor.” Charles Taylor, [Taylor-26455] a British soldier had rwo sons Charles and Thomas. Thomas [Taylor-26454] was married to Jennie Walker. isabella Godbehere has no connection to this Cherokee family. At the least the mythical folks should be disconnected from Kati.

Reattached Ellis Harlan, he was her third husband.

Also removed Ellis Harlan as a husband and Ellis Jr. as a son.
removed Susanna Harlan as a child of Ka-ti
Two of the children attached to this profile are NOT children of Kati. Susannah Harlan is the daughter of Ellis Harlan and a different Cherokee woman (see David Hampton book); unclear who "Ellis Harlan Jr" is meant to be, no person with this name/dates in Cherokee records.

This is a duplicate of Cherokee-62, please merge.

Kingfisher-7 and Cherokee-62 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles are for the same woman. Since she had no LNAB she should be merged into the profile with "Cherokee" as the LNAB.

Moytoy-131 and Cherokee-58 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles represent the same woman. The NA project would like LNAB to be the name of the tribe in cases where there is no surname. this would be Cherokee in the case of Ka-ti. please merge these profiles. thanks.
Kingfisher-5 and Kingfisher-2 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person
