Lewis was born in 1799. He died in 1838. [1]
Lewis Knight Cherry [C1a3f2a2], son of Aaron Cherry and Elizabeth Holmes Knight, was born 21 October 1799 in Edgecombe Co NC. He married Charity Brown, daughter of Jacob Brown Sr and Susannah _____, about 1827, probably in Martin Co. She was born 8 March 1807 in NC. In 1830 they lived in Martin Co and had one son by then. In Edgecombe Co, as part of the estate settlement of his father in the May 1842 court session, there was a division of the inherited slaves of Aaron Cherry among Aaron's heirs, "namely, Lunsford R Cherry, Sally R Jones, and Henry Hyman as guardian for the heirs of Lewis Cherry, decd., April 18, 1842." In 1830 Lewis was living in Martin Co next door to Dawson Cherry [C1a5b2c7]. Lewis K Cherry lived in Macon, GA as indicated by a Tax Digest of 1838. He was listed as owning 202½ acres of land in District 15, No. 128. An obit from Southern Christian Advocate dated 23 November 1838: "Lewis K. Cherry was born in Edgecombe Co., NC Oct 21, 1799 and removed to this state some years past. He died the 25th ult. of comsumption. Wife and three children survive." His death date was 25 October 1838 at Marshallville, Macon Co GA. He was buried near behind an inn on the Flint River. Family information stated that his wife put the fence around the grave at a later date, thus explaining the 1866 date on the gate. The grave is located on the property where the Stagecoach Inn near Marshallville, Macon Co., GA was located. This was on the old stagecoach road near the Flint River and the grave was below the Inn site.
His wife Charity married again, to John James Kaigler on 4 April 1841. There is an Edgecombe Co deed record (Book 26, page 382) in which "Charity Kaigler, formerly the widow of Lewis K Cherry" and Francis L Cherry, George W Cherry, James N Cole and wife Elizabeth of Russell Co AL all made deed transfers to Lunsford R Cherry on 18 January 1853. Lunsford was Lewis K Cherry's brother, and Charity was Lewis' widow who had remarried to a Mr Kaigler. Lewis' mother's 12 March 1840 will in Edgecombe Co named her son "Lewis K Cherry, deceased," so we know he had died by then.
In 1850 in Russell Co AL, Charity Kaigler was a widowed farmer, and was born in NC in 1807. Living with her were two Kaigler children, and next door in one home were her three children from her marriage with Lewis: Francis, George, and Elizabeth Cherry. Charity died on 7 July 1883 and was buried in the family plot in Rosemere Cemetery at Opelika, Lee Co AL next to her son George. Their known children were-
a. Francis Lafayette Cherry, b 3 May 1828
b. George Washington Cherry, b 17 Jul 1831
c. Sarah Elizabeth Cherry, b 1834
Charity's child from her marriage with John James Kaigler was James Kaigler, born in Russell Co in 1843. John J Kaigler also had a son from a prior marriage, William Kaigler, born in NC in 1835. Both boys were living with Charity in 1850. (57,83,95, 77,N,52n,1j,5epiq,386c) [2]
