Biography

Mary was born in 1867 to Sarah and James Cherry[1]

She possibly had 2 children out of wedlock:

Jane Marsh Cherry 1887[2][3]
Thomas Frank Cherry 1890[4]


Mary Jane married Thomas Osborne in 1891 [5]

They had 11 children together.


Mary Jane died 20 May 1911 aged 44 years[6]

Her children were very young when she died and six were sent to the Christchurch Receiving Home straight away as below.

LYTTELTON TIMES, VOLUME CXXII, ISSUE 15622, 22 MAY 1911 Six children of Thomas Osborne, between the ages of fourteen and five years, were committed to the Christchurch Receiving Home.

LYTTELTON TIMES, VOLUME CXXII, ISSUE 15644, 16 JUNE 1911 Thomas Osborne was ordered to contribute towards the maintenance of his six children in the Receiving Home at the rate of 3s per week.

The 2 youngest were sent about 2 months later

LYTTELTON TIMES, VOLUME CXXII, ISSUE 15675, 22 JULY 1911 George Henry Osborne and Martha Osborne, two children, were ordered to be sent to the Christchurch Receiving Home.[1]

Gentle in mind, patient in pain, My dear daughter left me, heaven to gain; With actions so noble, generous and kind, Few in the world her equal could find. Not gone from memory or from love, But gone to her Father’s home above. Inserted by her loving father and mother, S. and J. Cherry.[2]
