Biography

John was born about 1753.[1]His parents are unknown.[2]He likely married Sarah Lane in Frederick Co. in 1775. In 1776 he appears in the census of Frederick Co. with his wife, Sarah.[1]In 1778 he enlisted as a soldier in the Tenth Virginia Regiment, later incorporated into the Sixth Virginia Regiment, serving for one year.[3][4][5][6][7]He was declared fit for duty at Valley Forge in June 1778.[8]He was discharged in 1779 and by 1780 was serving with the first company of the Middle Battalion of the Maryland Militia. By 1790 he was a resident of Washington Co., Maryland[9]and by 1795 a resident of Mason Co., Kentucky. In 1800 he was listed in the tax lists of Washington Co., Kentucky,[10]where he remained for at least a decade.[11]By 1820 he was a resident of Hardin Co., Kentucky[12]and by 1830 a resident of Floyd Co., Indiana.[13] He passed away in 1836.[14]

John Chesshir aged seventy-five years and resident in said County who being duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the Act of Congress of the 18 March 1818 and the first of May 1820. That he the said John Chesshir enlisted for the term of one year as a volunteer on the ____ day of 1778 in the State of Virginia in Company commanded by Thomas West in the Regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Commandant Samuel Cowes in the line of the State of Virginia in the Continental establishment.

That said Regiment was composed chiefly of drafted men. That some of those who were drafted were not accepted either from their not being able to pass muster or from some other cause they were not enrolled and some ran away they having volunteered not being drafted was in consequence taken in ___?___ and enrolled to make up the quota of the Regiment. That he continued to serve the United States in __?__ aforesaid in said corps until the 17th day of February 1779 when he was discharged from the service at Camp Middle Brooke in the State of New Jersey as a drafted soldier owing he believes to the circumstances aforesaid. That he hereby relinquishes every Claim to a Pension except the Present that his name is not on the roll of any State except Virginia. And that the following are his reasons for not making earlier application for a Pension. That he until __?__ one year before making application was able to support himself by his bodily labor and in pursuance of the ___ of the 1st day of May 1820, I do solumnly swear that I was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my

Property or any part thereof with intent thereby __?__ ___?___ it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress E___?__ An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and navel service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not nor has any person for me in trust any Property or securities contracts or debts due to me, nor Have I any Income other that what is Contained in the Schedule hereto annexed and by me Subscribed. that since the Eighteenth day of March 18__ no changes have taken place in my property.
