Biography

James Chesley (Philip, Philip) was killed by Indians at same time as his brother, Capt. Samuel, 17 Sept. 1707. Pike's Journal says, "Octo. 14, 1705, Sab: Sarah Chesley (formerly Huggins) the wife of James Chesley of Oyster River, died after 4 days sickness with malig: feaver." Dover records say that he married Thamsin Wentworth, 29 Dec. 1704. Some error as to dates. She was dau. of Dea. Gershom Wentworth and m. (2) Dea. John Hayes and had eleven children. James Chesley had one son:[1]

  1. James b. 18 May 1706; m. Mehitable Waldron, (2) Lydia Home[1]

Tamson (35. VI), daughter of Ezekiel and Elizabeth Wentworth, is not heard of prior to being the wife (married by Rev. John Pike, 29 December 1704) of James Chesley, son of Philip Chesley and grandson of Philip Chesley. James was killed by the Indians, 15 September 1707. She married, 2d, John Hayes, a Deacon in the First Church of Dover. He was son of John Hayes, the emigrant, who came from Scotland about 1680, settled at Dover (N.H.) Corner and married Mary Horne. His family is given in the N. E. Hist. and Geneal. Register, October 1852. Deacon John Hayes lived in Dover, at what is known as Tole-End" a farming locality, a few miles up the Cochecho River from the falls on its west side. Tamson died before her second husband. He married, 2d, Mary (Roberts) widow of Samuel Wingate. He died 3 July 1759 and his tombstone is standing in Pine Hill burial ground.

Tamson had by her first marriage:

  1. 167. James Chesley, born 18 May 1706 [566] [2]
