Notes
Note N646Thomas Chesley was born in 1782, in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He was the son of Nathaniel and Hannah (Murray) Chesley. He married Hannah Sanborn in 1804 in Danville, Caledonia County, Vermont. She was born 28 June 1789. She is the daughter of Jonathan Hobbs and Sarah (Miles) Sanborn 1810 census, Danville, Caledonia County, Vermont. 2-males Under 10 (Nathaniel born 1806: Second Male ?), 1 male 26-44 (Thomas). 1 female 16-25 (Hannah). 1820 census for Stafford, Genesee Co., New York Thomas Chesley: 1 free white male under 10 years old, 1 free white male of 10 years old under 16 years old, 1 free white males 26-45 years old: 2 free white females under 10 years old, 1 free white female 26-45 years old. 1 person engaged in Agriculture. The family moved from Danville, Vermont to Stafford, Genesee County, New York by 1822 when daughter Malinda was born there. They were listed in Eagle Township, Allegany County, New York, in the U.S. Census of 1830. 1830 Census, (Thos Cheslee), Eagle Township, Allegany County, New York. 1-male 15-20 years old ( Lorenzo Dow ), 1-male 40-50 years old ( Thomas ); 1-female under 5 years old ( Lydia Ann ), 1 female 5-10 years old ( Melinda ),1 female 20-30 years old ( Hannah C.), 1 female 30-40 years old ( Hannah). Hannah the daughter of Thomas and Hannah, was born in 1808 and may have died before the 1830 census or was married living with her husband. Nathaniel the oldest son was married to Phebe Parrish in 1830 and was living in his own household in Eagle Township, Allegany County, New York.. Listed in 1840 census, Stafford, Genesee Co.,New York, 1 male 50-60. 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50. The one female 15-20 is probably Melinda ( Malinda), born 30 Oct.18 182 (All on the same census sheet is also listed, Benjamin Chesley, Lorenzo Chesley and Nathaniel Chesley) In 1850 census in the household is a Sally Parrish, female, 9 years old, born about 1841 in New York. The Parrish and Chesley family intermarried, but at this time I do not know who her parents would be. Glen Cross has her erroneously listed as a Sallie Chesley. He perhaps was not familiar with the inter marriage of the Chesley and Parrish families. The family joined the Christian Church in Stafford in 1835 where they were listed as members in the records of the church. They moved from Stafford in 1847, according to church records, and located in Pittsfield Township, Lorain County, Ohio where they were listed in 1850 census. Thomas and Hannah moved with son, Lorenzo, and his family, to Burr Oak Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan in1852. Thomas died there in 1860 and is buried in the old cemetery 1 1/2 miles south of Burr Oak off the road near the old Chesley farm. Their son Nathaniel Chesley moved to Butler Co., Iowa and started the Chesley family in Iowa. Hannah died in 1868 and is buried near her husband. On burial site for Thomas and his wife Hannah Sanborn Chesley, Dick Chesley (chesley 1945@@yahoo.com) writes in e-mail of March 31, 2008, the following. "I went through your genealogy report for Descendants of Nathaniel Chesley and only could find one item that i question. Thomas Chesley must have died before 1860, or at least before the 1860 census was taken, because Hannah is listed alone living with son Lorenzo Dow Chesley. Actually the inference here is that he could have died anythime after the 1850 census in Pittsfield Twp.and before the 1860 census. I remember my cousin, now deceased, who lived with my grandparents, Lorenzo G. and Mariam, from an early age until after high school. She remembers her grampa telling that he was supposed to get(inherit) his grandparents farm, but a tree fell on him. I don't know anymore about that story except that my grandfather was born in 1853 ( He told DWW earlier he was born Feb 28 1860) and must have known his grandfather in Burr Oak. As far as Chris's info on their burial site, I haven't a clue how she got that info, because the only Chesley farms in the area belonging to Chesley's were Thomas Chesley's(oldest son of Lorenzo Dow) and the farm belonging to his son, Carl Chesley. They were separate pieces of property and were both in Branch County. I checked Trayer cemetery and late last year asked the twp supervisor to check the other small cemetery nearby. He found no tombstones for Thomas and Hannah. The records for those ceneteries burned in a fire so we will never know if they were buried there. The only other possibility is unmarked graves or another very small and unknown burial ground. At that time wooden markers could have been used and they would be long gone. I am surprised that she didn't check land records more carefully in St. Joseph and Branch Counties. "
