Robert was born in 1764 in Darrock, County Antrim, Ireland. He was a son of Samuel and Annie (Clements) Chestnut.
He married Margaret McFee.
They moved first to Scotland where they lived from prior to 1793 and until at least 1815. They then came to Saint John, New Brunswick and finally to Fredericton. One account, in a death announcement for his daughter, says they came to New Brunswick in 1828 while Robert was commanding the ship "Waterloo."[1]

The account in his daughter's obituary indicates Robert emigrated to New Brunswick in 1828. In 1832 when his daughter was married in Saint John, however, Robert was described as being "of Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland." It is certainly possible given his career in shipping that he kept ties to the motherland for some time.
Unconfirmed entires in Worthington Family Tree indicate that Robert Chestnut was married in 1815 in Ireland and died Jan 10, 1846 in Fredericton. No corroborating record has been found, however.
