From information in his marriage record, Charles W. Chick was born in Charlotte, Virginia, to Henry A. Chick. Father Henry married Lucy Cunningham on February 3, 1823 in Campbell County, Virginia. Henry is noted next in the 1840 census of Charlotte, Virginia. In this record, it is noted the couple had 2 boys and 6 girls in the home. The parents are simply noted in the 30-40 year old columns, so born 1800-1810.

A December 18, 1866 marriage record for Goochland, Virginia gives Charles Wesley Chick's full name, and notes parents of Henry A. and Lucy Chick. Charles' wife, Geneva C. Cosby, estimated born in 1849 in the marriage record.

Charles would survive the war, and he and Geneva (or Genevive), per the 1880 census of Haytokah, Nottaway, Virginia, would have at least four children:
