Reverend Heckard was of the Methodist faith. He was an infantry platoon leader in Germany during World War II, during which service he earned a Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge. He later served in the Philippines. Following his ordination, he was a chaplain in Korea, Europe, Viet Nam, and the United States; during that time, he received several other medals and commendations. He completed his undergraduate education after the war, graduated from Wofford College (Spartanburg, South Carolina, United States) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947, then went on to obtain his Master in Divinity from Candler School of Theology at Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia, United States).
He appears to have been in continuous service with the United States Army from 1951 until 1978, retiring as a Colonel.
He and his wife were not parents of any children, but they frequently were visited in their home by the offspring of other relatives.
