- In North Carolina history, Wilkes County was named in 1779 from part of Surry County. [1] However Surry County was formed in 1771 from Rowan County, Rowan wasn't a county until 1753 and was formed from Anson County and to go back to the birth year above, Anson was formed from Bladen County in 1750. [2]
