Biography

The origins of Elizabeth Smyth who married Samuel Smith have been located! She was daughter of Phillip Smith and Ann Grymwald.[1]

"Samuel Smyth married Elizabeth Smyth 6 Oct 1624 at St Margaret Church Whatfield, Suffolk Co., England. The church record is in Suffolk Co. Their 1st son Samuel was baptized there a year later. Then the family moved a few miles to the bigger town of Hadleigh where 4 more children were baptized (one died). They left for the Colonies in 1634.[2]

"The parish registers of St. Margaret's, Whatfield co., Suffolk, England, show the Oct. 6. 1624, marriage of Samuel Smyth to Elizabeth Smyth, and the baptism of their son Samuel on Feb. 8 1625 [1625/6?]. The young couple next appear at Hadleigh, co. Suffolk, three miles south of Whatfield where, at the church of St. Mary the Virgin, they baptized Elizabeth on Jan. 28, 1627 [probably New Style]; Mary, Oct. 9, 1628; and Philip, November 1632."[3]

She landed in Boston from England in 1634, along with her husband and four oldest children on the ship Elizabeth.

She died 16 MAR 1686 in Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts. [citation needed]

Research Notes

The wife of Lieutenant Samuel Smith of Wethersfield, Conn., has often been named erroneously as Elizabeth Chileab. The following article appeared in abbreviated form in "The Hartford Times, " 8 Jan 1956:

About one year after their arrival from England, Lt. Samuel Smith's wife gave birth to a son,1 to whom they gave the unusual name of Chileab. Someone, possibly Stiles (he must at least be charged with responsibility for passing on the fiction in his "History of Ancient Wethersfield 2:646), assumed that this unusual name must have been the surname of the mother. It is unfortunate that Stiles failed to consult his Bible concordance. Had he done so, he would have learned that Lt. Smith, a devout man who made a bequest of a Bible in his will to each of his grandchildren gave biblical names to each one of his other sons, Samuel, Philip, John, - and Chileab was no exception; the original Chileab was the son of King David by Abigail (II Samuel, 111;3). According to Rev. William Jenks, "Comprehensive Commentary on the Holy Bible" (1836), Chiliab signifies "like his father, or the father's picture." Due to the unusual circumstances of Chileab's birth, Abigail being the lawful wife of Nabal the Carmelite, we may reasonable ascribe the touching choice of the babe's name to Abigail rather than to David.

In any event in the 7 Oct. 1929 issue of "The Boston Evening Transcript," one C.D.A. wrote, in answer to query 8072-15. If Lieutenant Smith had named the child Chedorlaomer, Jaazaniah, Yephibosneth, or Maher-shalal-hash-baz ( all biblical masculine names), there would have been as much ground for assuming the selected name was.the family name of Elizabeth as there was that it was Chileab."

The bio names her father Richard Smith. Based on previous comments and the link to Phillip, I assume this is a mistake?

Her surname has been identified as Smith(or Smyth) from parish registers of St.Margaret's, Whatfield, Co. Suffolk where her marriage to Samuel is recorded. Earlier resources indicating her surname to have been "Chileab" have been refuted. NEHGR Vol.174. A series of articles published in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register published in the Winter, Spring, and Summer of 2020 outline an extensive search of records in Suffolk, England. A review of wills establishes the parentage of Elizabeth as Philip Smith(Smith-214546) and Ann Grymwade Smith,(Grymwade-1)

Church records indicate she was baptized 22 Jul 1599 in Erwarton, Suffolk, England. : She needs to be connected to her parents.

Oops. Never mind. I see the citation on the parents profiles.

Smith-214553 and Smyth-346 appear to represent the same person because: Dup profile, see NEHGR vol 174 and comments on Smyth-346 which has the proper last name per baptism & marriage

It looks like Rick's NEHGR vol 174 posting from a few months ago confirms parents which are set up already on Smith-214553. Does anybody have any objection to continuing the merge?
posted by Brad Stauf
I added more source information, including her baptism information, with the hope that the merge with Smith-214553 can continue.

Chileab-10 and Smyth-346 appear to represent the same person because: Barbara, if the profile in your family tree doesn't show birth in England, that probably indicates an error in the tree. If this man is a child of white European parents, he could not have been born in New England as early as 1602.

Chileab-10 and Smyth-346 do not represent the same person because: Chileab Smith in my tree was not born in England

Chileab-10 and Smyth-346 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, same husband, same child. Please note that the Smyth-346 has a prominent notice reading "Disproven Surname: Chileab."

Smyth-2371 and Smyth-346 appear to represent the same person because: Hello. Sorry to bother you busy busy PGM folks but this profile is a duplicate with a little bit of a complicated LNAB history. This was an orphan profile which I believed also a duplicate but I'm probably not the first to identify it. I guess I'm the first trying to correct it. LNAB TAG article is being relied upon to conclude that her LNAB is actually SMYTHE not CHILEAB (one of her son's names). If there isn't a problem with the process I've guided this profile through please approve and execute the merge. Also - Have a Great Day :-) corny, I know.
Linda the answer to your question of the husbands being merged is 'yes'. Of course no valid text from any profile should be lost in the merge process, that's understood in the Wikitree policy. Also, any invalid LNAB should be either merged away or adjusted to the correct LNAB. And this information, about the past activities, need not be lost. The history of these corrections can be recorded in the Research Notes section. Leigh Anne :-)
If Chileab female profiles are merged, the husband profiles also need to be merged together, since they are probably the same people and then merge to Smith-1852, but nothing should be taken from these profiles since Smith-1852 has all of the disputed information probably.
After merging the Chileab profiles, is the plan to merge to Smyth-346 to get rid of the Chileab profiles?
Leigh Ann, all duplicates should be merged into the final target (this one); we don't merge dupes together under an incorrect surname and then merge the result into this one. We go directly into this one. The system doesn't do well with what they call multiple redirects.

There are several erroneous Elizabeth Chileab profiles that need to 'go away'. I have initiated the merge process under the surname Chileab in order to achieve this goal. That remaining profile will need merging into this profile in order to finalize the clean-up. Thanks for your help with this.
Chileab-3 and Chileab-5 appear to represent the same person because: Obviously these are junk profiles that need to be eliminated as best possible.
