Biography

Chronology

April 4, 1671 -- Captain Henry Chiles's father Lt. Colonel Walter ([1]) represented on Captain Henry and his brother John regarding land in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

November 13, 169_ -- Captain Henry's son, Henry was baptized at St. Peter's Parish Register, New Kent County, Virginia ([2])

January 5, 169_ -- Captain Henry's son, Walter, was baptized at St. Peter's Parish, New Kent county, Virginia ([3]).

__ 4, 169_ -- Henry Childes's {sic}, Gentleman, Son, James, was baptized at St. Peter's Parish, New Kent county, Virginia ([4]).

1702 -- Captain Henry was elected a vestryman of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent county, Virginia.

1702 -- Captain Henry and his wife Mary had a son named Malachi.

In 1714 Henry Chiles was again listed as a Justice for New Kent while his brother John was a Justice of the Peace from King William County.

The last record of Henry Chiles on the St. Paul's Parish Vestry Book of Hanover County was : "At a Vestry held at ye lower Church ye 29 Oct 1720. Mr. David Meriwether was admitted a Vestryman for this Parish in the room of Mr. Henry Chiles, lately deceased."

There is a deed in Orange Co. Va. dated 17 Jun 1765 which states: "Mary Howle of Orange Co. Va. for love and affection for her son Malachi Chiles gives certain slaves left her by will to the said Mary Howle (then Mary Chiles) will bearing date 29 Apr 1718 by Henry Chiles, father of said Malachi. Malachi to pay his mother Mary 22 pounds 10 shillings, etc." which she acknowledges. Fifteen negroes are named.

We have been unable to ascertain the maiden name of the above named Mary. There is a possibility she belonged to the Quaker faith. Several of the last named children of Henry, Sr. have names that were unfamiliar to the Chiles family of the Church of England line. These names (Hezekiah, Micajah, Manoah and Malachi) were used often among the Quaker families. The Quakers established the first Monthly Meeting house in this area in 1699, the second in 1719.

The controversial "Water Mill" deed is found in Hanover County Deed Book I page 254. It is abstracted as follows: "John Smith, of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., deed from William Chambers of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., carpenter, 50 acres in St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., on southward branch, on the lower side containing a water mill, and being part of a tract bought by John Jones of Micajah Childs, and sold by said Jones to said Chambers Feb. 5, 1730, adjoining Jones, Holland, one acre part was formerly deeded by Henry Chiles to said Chambers Feb. 3, 1729.Date of Deed 7 Jun 1735."

The Parishes of the Church of England kept good records called Registers (which included births, deaths, marriages, etc.) and/or Vestry Books which contained minutes of the vestry meetings, "processioning" orders, and occasionally "processioning" returns.

Unfortunately, New Kent county's records were destroyed in a fire set by an arsonist. Consequently, in almost all instances the Parish records provide the only documentation required by genealogists.

MFL note: This gedcom (as of 01 MAR 2009) shows 1) Henry Chiles b. 1671 with two wives: Margaret? ___ (four children from his 1st marriage), and 2) Mary Winston (five children from his 2nd marriage). Of these five, three Chiles siblings (Ann, Micajah, and Agatha) married three Terrell siblings (Henry, Mary, and David). These conclusions are supported by the following article: [5]

"... Henry Chiles, youngest child of Walter (II) and only child by Susannah, was living in St. Peters Parish, New Kent County in 1699. He was elected a vestryman of St. Peters Parish in 1702. In the records he is sometimes referred to as Capt. Chiles. Chamberlyne (1937, p. 73).12 An old deed, found by Cridlin in the Clerk's Office of King William County, transfers from Richard Littlepage, Gent., and Frances, his wife, 2 November 1702, 400 acres in King William, formerly King and Queen, on the north side of the Pamunkey River, to Henry Chiles, Gent., of St. Peters Parish, New Kent, Cridlin (1911, p. 214).13 Henry was justice in New Kent in 1714 (Virginia Hist. Mag., Vol. 2, p. 9).14 He married supposedly Margarett (?) Littlepage, according to Cridlin (1911, p. 214,15 and perhaps only or secondly, Mary (? Winston). Long time Chiles researcher, Miss Mildred O. Eubank, of Franklin, Kentucky, relates that Bill Randolph of Texas discovered that Mary, wife of Henry Chiles at his death in 1718/19, left a deed in Orange County, Virginia, recorded in Deed Book 14, p. 10,16 and dated 15 June 1765. Therein, [Page 2, Unknown Daughters of Walter Chiles] Mary Howle of Orange County, "for love and affection for her son Malachi Chiles, gives slaves - left by will to said Mary Howle (then Mary Chiles) will bearing date 29 April 1718 by Henry Chiles father of said Malachi Chiles." Issue of Henry Chiles: (Margaret ? married 1711 to Samuel Dagnell, of Middlesex County - very doubtful that she is Henry?s daughter); Henry baptized 13 November 1695?20 Walter baptized 5 January 1699?20 James baptized 1702;20 Hezekiah; Richard; Daniel? (doubtful); and Valentine; after Cridlin (1911, p. 214). In addition, he had sons Manoah, recorded as son of Henry in [6] and Malachi, who only appears in Mary Chiles Howle?s deed, Orange Co., Virginia Deed Book 14, p. 10.19 Micajah Chiles and Agatha and Ann Chiles, all of whom married Terrells, are his son and daughters too.[7]

Census: ABT 1699 Pamunkey Neck, St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co, VA
ELEC: ABT 1702 Vestryman, St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co, VA
ELEC: ABT 1714 Justice, New Kent Co, VA
Will: 29 APR 1718 VA

[8]

Mary, wife of Henry Chiles at his death in 1718/19, left a deed in Orange County, Virginia, recorded in Deed Book 14, p. 10,16 and dated 15 June 1765. Therein, Mary Howle of Orange County, "for love and affection for her son Malachi Chiles, gives slaves ... left by will to said Mary Howle (then Mary Chiles) will bearing date 29 April 1718 by Henry Chiles father of said Malachi Chiles."[9]

Notes

- GenForum (Littlepage family) Post 36, 10 JUL 1998 by Joyce Uhl: "Research was done in the 1940s on the English Littlepages, but there was never a clear connection found between the Littlepages of Oxfordshire and the Littlepages in Virginia. It is felt the the original Littlepage brothers were Richard and Edmund. Edmund apparently left no children. Richard did. Margaret (Littlepage) Chiles has been identified for generations as being the daughter of the first Richard Littlepage of New Kent County by the Chiles family. The Littlepages have never mentioned this Margaret. There is no clear proof that she was a Littlepage."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:

Chiles-104 and Chiles-26 appear to represent the same person because: It's fairly obvious that if there are two men named Henry Chiles who married a Margaret Littlepage who were both born circa 1660 and died circa 1720, they must be the same person.
