Biography

Cyrus Chipman, M.D. was born in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut, on December 3, 1761. In early life he was a militiaman and served as a private from Vermont in the American Revolution.

After studying medicine he began its practice in Pawlett, Vermont where his brother, Lemuel, was located. Removing in 1795 to Pittstown (now Richmond) New York.

He made large purchases of land and was for a time interested in mercantile operations which involved him in troublesome but not grave loss. When he came to Rochester in 1826 he acquired government land and farmed it. Dr.Chipman brought 70 sheep from New York to his farm. Though he kept them in a pen with eight foot rail side, wolves killed 40 sheep in one night. The rest of the flock was destroyed in the next few years.

Cyrus moved to Avon Township, Oakland, Michigan in 1821 and was for many years a prominent physician. He held the position of postmaster for twelve years; the first township post office was in his home; and then removed to Rochester Village.

He resumed his successful medical practice until his death in 1840.

He married Anna Fitch probably in Pawlett, Vermont, on October 3, 1787. Cyrus died on September 17, 1840 in Rochester, Oakland, Michigan, at age 78. His body was interred at Mt. Avon Cemetery in Rochester, Oakland, Michigan. The gravestone bears inscriptions for both Cyrus and his wife, Anna. His part reads:

Doct. Cyrus Chipman DIED Oct. 17, 1840 Aged 79 Years

In addition, another plaque has been placed at the foot of the stone by the Michigan Sons of the American Revolution which reads:
