Sarah Amelia Chittenden was born in New Haven County, Connecticut in 1830. She was the daughter of Joel Chittenden and Sally Carter. The family was a sea faring family and two of Sarah’s brothers were lost at sea aboard “The Ocean.”
In 1848, Sarah married William Frederick Bishop, the son of Frederic Bishop and Olive Bassett, in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut.

Next door her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and 2 more Bishop sons:
