From James Chittleborough's headstone, it is implied that he was born in 1778 as his age at death was 75 years. This approximation is also validated by James' age at the time of his military discharge of 52 in 1830.
James was baptised on September 2, 1781, at Topcroft, Norfolk, England. His parents are listed as Benjamin and Sarah Chittleburgh.

On February 9, 1817, James married Maria Hutson at St. Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England

James is believed to have served in the Royal Navy for approximately 22 years. He was invalided out on a pension due to rheumatism at the age of 52. [3][4]
James was involved in the Battle of Trafalgar, aboard the ship Phoebe, at the rank of Ship's Corporal. For his involvement, he was awarded the Naval General Service Medal [5]
His military records are the first occasion that James' last name is recorded at Chittleborough.
On December 28, 1836, James and his family arrived in South Australia aboard the Buffalo. [6] CHITTLEBOROUGH James, Maria COATS, Maria Hutson, Eliz Loney, Wm, Sarah, Jas arrived 1836-12-24 on HMS Buffalo from Portsmouth 36-07-13 via Spithead 36-07-23, St Helens 36-08-03, Rio de Janeiro 36-10-12
It is thought that James' prior link with Governor Hindmarsh when they both served together at the Battle of Trafalgar played a part in his family's emigration aboard the Buffalo which was captained by Hindmarsh.
James Chittleborough operated one of the first pubs in South Australia. The Buffalo's Head started trading on September 25 1837 from a tent near the site of Old Adelaide Gaol and then moved to Hindley St in 1838. [7]
James died on October 4, 1853, at his home in Hurtlevale [8]
James is buried at Christ Church Cemetery, O'Halloran Hill, Marion City, South Australia.[9]
