Biography

Gus was born 21 Feb 1874 in Fort Worth Texas, the son of Joseph Daniel Chitwood and Ellen McDonnel Chitwood.

He married Cordelia "Cordy" Watson on 22 Jul 1896 in Brown County Texas. Family lore says they eloped. Original Marriage Document

They had two children: Roy David Chitwood 1898 – 1971 Rosebud Chitwood Slaughter 1907 – 1990.

In 1912 Gus became a police office with the El Paso Police Department.

On 13 Feb 1915, at the age of 40, Gus was killed in the line of duty after being shot by a .41 Caliber handgun. in El Paso, Texas, USA. Texas Death Certificate

From the Fallen Officer Memorial:

"Patrolman Chitwood was shot and killed while investigating gunfire in an alley. While shinning his flashlight in the alley a shot rang out striking him. A suspect was apprehended and taken to the detectives office. While in custody he confessed to the murder of Patrolman William Paschall two months earlier. After the confession, he attempted to grab an officer's handgun and was shot and killed by other officers."
