Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

William Chorley was christened on 4 Dec 1816 at St Mary the Virgin Church in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of Matthew Chorley and Ellen (Stott) Chorley. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Prescot.

William married Sarah Aspey on 1 Oct 1837 at Rainford Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot. Both were minors (not yet 21 years old), and neither had been married before. William was a miner living in Eccleston; Sarah lived in Whiston. Their fathers were named as Matthew Chorley (miner) and Thomas Aspey (miner). The witnesses were William Brown and Elizabeth Aspey.

Their daughter Jane Chorley was christened on 27 Sep 1840 at St Mary the Virgin Church in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was given as collier, and the family's address as Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, Jane was nine months old. The family were living in Eccleston, just south of the highway from Prescot to St Helens, and in or near a lane called New Brighton. William's parents lived next door. William was working as a coal miner. The household also included a female servant, Ann Aspey, aged 10-14, presumably a relative of Sarah.

William and Sarah's daughter Ellen was born in about 1843 in Eccleston.

Jane died in 1849, aged 8. She was buried on 3 Jun 1849 at St Mary the Virgin Church in Prescot, Lancashire. Her family's address was still Eccleston.

By March 30th 1851, the family were living in Eccleston Road, Eccleston. William was now working as a provision dealer. An eleven-year-old servant girl named Sarah Brown lived with them.
