Laurence Chorley was born on 2 May 1810, and christened on 10 Jun 1810 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of Henry and Clarris Chorley. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Prescot.

Laurence married Ellen Rigby on 3 May 1836 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of Eccleston in the parish of Prescot; the witnesses were John Hall and Sarah Rigby.
