Karla was the only child of Richard and Virginia (Staker) Chrisman of Fayette and Madison Counties, Kentucky. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1953, Karla was a gifted violinist, choreographer, ballet dancer, and worship dancer. She attended Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky, the Cincinnati Conservatory and Transylvania University. She married Frank Mortyn in California, and they had one daughter, Erika. After her divorce, Karla and her daughter lived in Lima, New York, where she attended Elim Bible Institute. Karla also lived in Del Mar, California; Jacksonville, Florida; Huntington, West Virginia; and Berea, Kentucky. Karla and Erika also spent some years as missionaries in Egypt, Israel, Romania, Austria, and Edinburg, Scotland. Karla lived in Mountain View, Missouri, the last years of her life and died there in Feburary, 2016. She is buried in the Chrisman Cemetery in Knob Lick, Kentucky.
