Biography

1860 Census shows David and Rachel farming at Oxford Township in Johnson County, Iowa. In addition to their children (Emma, Elizabeth, Eliza and William), Eliza Rice (49) and Hannah Rice (17) are living with the family.[1]

1870 Census shows David and Rachel farming at Lincoln Township in Montgomery County, Iowa. Both David and Rachel are shown as born in Pennsylvania, as is eldest child, Emma, age 19. All the other children are shown as born in Iowa: Elizabeth (16), Eliza (14), William (11), George (9), Sarah (5), Charles H (4) and Mary (2).[2]

David, a stone mason, died in 1902 at the age of 74 and was buried at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, Pennsylvania.[3][4]

Research Notes

  • Believe the 1860 Census led to an erroneous assumption that David was son of Eliza Rice. She should have been identified as mother-in-law as she was the mother of David's wife, Rachel Custer. Also, there is no evidence that she was associated with David's father Felix Chrisman (although this relationship is also in doubt.
  • Should remove Eliza Cutchler/Rice as mother of David Chrisman.
