Biography

Novelist. Genealogist of the Christian and Hicks Beach families.

Married an Earl's widowed brother when she was 36 and he was 61. The Earl had only one son, unmarried, so she had some prospect of becoming a Countess. But her husband lived another 20 years and failed to compensate with a title, the Earl having managed to produce a viable 4-year-old grandson by the time of his death.

Since the Earl lived at Williamstrip, in Coln St Aldwyns, his brother was able to live at Witcombe Park.

Research notes

Father

Admiral Henry Christian (1828-1910), Chief Constable of Gloucestershire.

Commissioned as a Midshipman at the age of 13, he ended his active service at 36 as second in command of a steamer running the Nassau blockade (having previously commanded the Royal Yacht). He became an Admiral much later, the principle of Buggins' turn continuing to apply after retirement.

3 of his 8 great-grandparents had the surname Christian, and his wife's ancestry looked very similar to his own.
