Biography

His birth year is disputed. Thomas was born about 1776.[1] Thomas Christian, son of Allen Christian, was born about 1778 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.[2] Thomas was born about 1779.[3]

In 1804, Thomas Christian, of Norfolk, in Virginia, re-entered the United States at New Orleans on the Third Day of September 1804. [4] He was obviously a Seaman who was returning to the Port of New Orleans and had to swear out an affidavit because he didn't have a passport or other papers. Thomas described himself as age 26, 5 ft, 5&3/4 in. tall, with brown eyes, brown hair, and a brown complexion. He also had a scar on the right side of his chin. (He signed with an "X." One Mr. John Baker swore that he was well acquainted with Thomas Christian and verily believes he is a native of Norfolk, in Virginia. (He signed his name).

Thomas's parents are also questioned. See Research Notes.

Thomas married Margaret "Rebecca" Pine in 1826.[2]

Thomas Christian and Rebecca were already established in Perry Co, KY by 1828. This is proven by a deed for 50 acres of land 29 Sept 1828 (Deed book A page 335), along with several more acres. Had the couple survived to the formation of Letcher Co. from Perry they would have found their land holdings divided by the new county line and a family cemetery just across the border in Letcher Co.[1]

Thomas died March 31, 1840 in Perry County, Kentucky.[2] We can likely infer that Thomas Christian was Nancy's father based on a later will wherein she and Henry Banks are named, along with Thomas, and several of Nancy's siblings. See Henry Banks' profile for details on land records and will of Thomas Christian.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:
